Founder Ajith Jayawickrema set up his First Turtle Bay in 2011 following a trip to Barbados’s Surf Side bar.
ecsec were invited to carry out the build of Turtle Bay’s 18th restaurant in Derby. The restaurant is housed in the old Job Centre in The Wardwick.
The fit out is a contemporary industrial setting with a beach bar at its heart. The Caribbean reggae music scene is also integrated in the design with vinyl records hanging from the reclaimed ceiling and stacks of vintage radios adorning the colourful walls. At the back of the restaurant is the kitchen which houses the fiery grill where the excellent food is created. Whilst eating and drinking you will hear the reggae music being played in the background.
90% of materials used on the fit out are reclaimed giving the authentic feel of a Caribbean shack. The work consisted of some major structural works which included the removal of the 4-storey lift shaft to allow more covers on the ground floor, removing wall and column claddings back to the original fabric to give an authentic Caribbean feel.
